What You’ll Walk Away With
A data-driven optimisation process for your opt-in system — the specific metrics to track, the elements to test, and the iterative improvement framework that continuously improves your conversion rate over time without requiring a complete redesign.

L6M6.1

Why Optimisation Matters More Than Creation

Most online entrepreneurs spend the majority of their energy on creation — new lead magnets, new landing pages, new opt-in forms. They treat optimisation as optional. This is backwards.

The math that makes this obvious
Current
15% conversion × 500 visitors/mo
75
subs/mo
After optimisation
30% conversion × 500 visitors/mo
150
subs/mo ↑2×

That improvement doesn’t require a new lead magnet, a bigger audience, or more traffic. It requires understanding what is preventing visitors from opting in and systematically removing those barriers.

Optimisation compounds. A conversion rate improvement made today applies to every visitor who lands on that page from now on — producing subscriber gains without compounding effort. This is one of the highest-leverage activities in your entire online business.

L6M6.2

The Metrics That Matter

Before you can optimise, you need to know where you stand. These are the four conversion metrics worth tracking monthly.

Metric 01
Landing Page Conversion Rate
(subscribers from landing page ÷ landing page visitors) × 100

From MailerLite subscriber source data + Google Analytics page traffic.

Under 15%
Headline, offer, or trust signals need work
15–25%
Good — incremental optimisation will improve this
25–40%
Strong — well-converting page
40%+
Exceptional — typically with warm targeted traffic

Metric 02
Homepage Opt-In Rate
(subscribers from homepage ÷ homepage visitors) × 100
Benchmark: 2–5%
Homepage visitors are less targeted than landing page visitors

Metric 03
In-Content Opt-In Rate
(subscribers from in-content forms ÷ blog post visitors) × 100
Benchmark: 3–8%
from blog post visitors
Content upgrades: 10–20%
hyper-relevant to the specific post

Metric 04
Delivery Email Open Rate

Tells you how many subscribers are genuinely engaged from the start. A low open rate signals either a deliverability problem or a weak subject line.

Benchmark: 50–70%
on your delivery email
→Below 40%: investigate spam deliverability first, then test new subject lines

L6M6.3

The Five Elements Worth Testing

Not every element on your opt-in page impacts conversion equally. These five elements — in order of typical impact — are where your testing effort should focus.

Element 01

The Headline
Highest impact

Your headline is the single biggest conversion driver. A compelling headline can double or triple your conversion rate. A weak one can make even a valuable lead magnet invisible.

What to test
Benefit vs curiosity
Specific vs broad
Numbers vs no numbers
Question vs statement
✗ Version A (current)

“Free AI Marketing Guide”

✓ Version B (test)

“The 30-Page Blueprint That Showed Me How to Earn My First $500 Online Using AI Tools”

Test method: run Version A for 30 days, switch to Version B for 30 days with equal traffic. Compare conversion rates. Keep the winner.

Element 02

The Lead Magnet Offer

Sometimes the headline is fine but the offer itself isn’t compelling enough. Signs your offer needs work:

→High page visits but low opt-ins even with a strong headline
→Subscribers who immediately unsubscribe after receiving the lead magnet
→Low engagement on your delivery email
What to test
→Different lead magnet formats (ebook vs checklist vs toolkit)
→A more specific version of the same offer
→A completely different topic that serves the same audience

Element 03

CTA Button Text and Colour

The button that completes the opt-in is the final action the visitor takes. Both the text and visual prominence affect conversion.

Button text
Get Instant Access
Send Me the Guide
Yes, I Want This
Also test
High-contrast color vs brand color
Larger button size

Element 04

The Form Fields

Every additional field reduces conversion rate. Test first name + email vs email only.

Removing the first name field typically increases opt-ins by 10–20% — but removes personalisation from email sequences. The tradeoff is usually worth it only if you’re not using first name personalisation in your emails.

Element 05

Social Proof

Subscriber counts, testimonials, media mentions — reduces perceived risk of subscribing. Adding it typically improves conversion by 5–15%.

→No social proof vs subscriber count (“Join 2,000+ readers”)
→A brief testimonial about the lead magnet
→Recognisable logos (“As seen in…”)
⚠️

Only use social proof you actually have. Invented subscriber counts or fabricated testimonials damage trust permanently.

L6M6.4

How to Run a Proper A/B Test

An A/B test compares two versions of a page, form, or element to determine which performs better. Running it correctly ensures your conclusions are reliable — not the result of random variation.

1
Test one element at a time

If you change the headline AND button AND image simultaneously, you won’t know which change caused any improvement. Isolate one variable per test.

2
Run until statistical significance

Wait until each version has been seen by at least 100 visitors. With 500 monthly visitors, that means at least 3–4 weeks per test before drawing conclusions.

3
Use equal traffic distribution

Both versions should receive approximately the same amount of traffic. Different days of the week produce different behavior — don’t run Version A Mon–Wed and Version B Thu–Sat.

Running A/B tests with your tools
MailerLite

Built-in A/B testing for email subject lines and content. Use for delivery email subject lines and welcome sequence variations.

WordPress

Use Google Optimize (free) or Nelio A/B Testing (WordPress plugin) for landing page testing. These split traffic between two versions and track conversion events.

Manual

Without tools: run Version A for 30 days, record the rate, switch to Version B for 30 days, compare. Less statistically rigorous but practically useful for identifying significant improvements.

L6M6.5

The Monthly Optimisation Review

Optimisation should be a monthly habit. Here is a 45-minute review process that keeps your opt-in system continuously improving.

Monthly review — 45 minutes total
Step 1
10 min
Pull your metrics

From MailerLite: new subscribers, source breakdown, delivery email open rate. From Google Analytics: landing page visits, bounce rate, time on page. Calculate all three conversion rates.

Step 2
5 min
Identify your weakest metric

Which metric is furthest below its benchmark? That is where your optimisation focus goes this month. Don’t try to improve everything simultaneously.

Step 3
10 min
Diagnose the cause

Use the AI prompt from L6M6.6 to identify the most likely causes of your conversion gap and which element to test first.

Step 4
20 min
Design and implement one test

Implement the highest-priority change. Write alternative headlines with AI. Gather a real subscriber testimonial. Update the button label. Document: what you changed, when, and what you’re measuring.

Step 5
0 min
Set a review date

Calendar reminder 30 days out. That’s when you evaluate the test result and decide whether to keep the change or revert.

L6M6.6

Using AI to Generate Optimisation Ideas

When you’re stuck on what to test, AI provides a fast, data-driven starting point. AI generates testing hypotheses significantly faster than manual brainstorming — turning what used to be an hour of head-scratching into a 5-minute prompt session.

For headline testing
“My lead magnet landing page headline currently reads: ‘[current headline].’ The offer is [describe]. My audience is [describe]. The page is converting at [X]%. Write 10 alternative headline options. Include a mix of: benefit-focused, curiosity-driven, number-led, and question-format headlines.”
For CTA button text
“Write 10 CTA button text options for an opt-in form offering [your lead magnet]. Each should be action-oriented, benefit-focused, and under 6 words. No generic ‘Subscribe’ or ‘Sign Up.'”
For diagnosing low conversion
“Here is my lead magnet landing page copy: [paste full page copy]. My conversion rate is [X]%. The traffic is [describe source]. Identify the top 3 reasons this page might not be converting at 25%+ and suggest specific, testable improvements for each.”
