A complete visual identity for your digital product — professional cover design, internal formatting, sales page graphics, and promotional visuals — built entirely in Canva, with a repeatable design system you can apply to every future product.

L10M4.1

Why Design Determines Perceived Value

Two digital products with identical content can sell at dramatically different price points and conversion rates based on design alone. This is not superficial — design is a genuine signal of quality, professionalism, and care that buyers use to predict whether the content inside will meet the same standard.

Generic, unstyled

A generic cover and inconsistent internal formatting signals: “this was thrown together quickly.”

Clean, branded

A consistent, professional design signals: “this person takes their work seriously, and the content probably reflects that.”

Buyers make this judgment in seconds — often before reading a single word of content. Your product’s design is doing persuasion work before your content ever gets the chance to.

The good news: professional design no longer requires design skill or expensive software. Canva has made high-quality visual design accessible to anyone willing to learn its templates and tools — which is exactly what this module covers.

Setting Up Your Product Design System

Before designing any individual product, build the foundational brand system that every future product will draw from. This investment — made once — accelerates every subsequent product design significantly.

Step 1

Configure Your Canva Brand Kit
Pro required

In Canva, go to Brand → Brand Kit. Add:

  • Your primary brand colors (2–4 colors maximum — pull these from your website)
  • Your brand fonts (one heading font, one body font — consistency matters more than variety)
  • Your logo (multiple versions: full color, white/transparent background, icon-only)

Once configured, every new design can pull directly from this brand kit — ensuring every product, social post, and graphic maintains visual consistency without manually matching colors and fonts each time.

Step 2

Create a Master Ebook/PDF Template

Build one comprehensive template that becomes your starting point for every future ebook or PDF guide:

  • Cover page layout
  • Table of contents page layout
  • Chapter title page layout
  • Standard body page layout (consistent margins, heading styles, callout box design)
  • Closing/about page layout

Save this as a Canva template — duplicate this design file for each new product. Every new ebook starts from this template rather than from a blank page, saving hours per product after the first one.

Step 3

Create a Master Cover Design Template

Build a flexible cover template with placeholder text and image areas that can be quickly customized for each new product. A consistent cover style across your product line also builds brand recognition — buyers who see a new product cover immediately recognize it as yours.

L10M4.3

Designing Your Product Cover

Your cover is the single most important visual asset for your product — it appears on your sales page, in promotional graphics, in email campaigns, and on any platform listing.

Cover design principles:

Clarity

The title must be immediately readable, even at thumbnail size. Test by shrinking your design to 200px wide — can you still read the title clearly? If not, increase font size or simplify the design.

Subtitle

Your title states what the product is. Your subtitle states what it does for the buyer. “The Email Sequence Template Pack” (title) + “7 Done-For-You Sequences That Turn Subscribers Into Buyers” (subtitle).

Hierarchy

The title should be the largest, boldest element. Subtitle smaller. Your name or brand smaller still. A visitor’s eye should move through the cover in the correct order of importance without confusion.

Brand Match

Use your brand colors and fonts from your Brand Kit. A cover that doesn’t match your website creates a jarring, unprofessional disconnect.

Mockup

Rather than a flat rectangular cover image, use Canva’s mockup features (or Smartmockups.com, free tier available) to display your product as a 3D book, stack of papers, or device screen. Mockups significantly increase perceived value — they make a digital product feel tangible.

Building the Cover in Canva

1.Search “Ebook Cover” or “Book Cover” in Canva templates
2.Select a template matching your visual style
3.Replace the template’s image with a relevant graphic, photo, or abstract design
4.Replace title and subtitle text with your product’s copy
5.Apply your Brand Kit colors and fonts
6.Export at high resolution (PNG, 300 DPI minimum)
7.Optional: apply to a 3D mockup template for sales page use

L10M4.4

Internal Document Design

Once your cover establishes the first impression, your internal pages need to maintain that quality throughout the entire product.

Heading Hierarchy

Chapter Titles H1

Largest, boldest, often on their own page or with significant whitespace above.

Section Headings H2

Medium size, consistent color (often your brand’s primary accent color).

Subsection Headings H3

Smaller, bold, used sparingly for further organization.

Apply these consistently using Canva’s text styles — set them once and reuse rather than manually formatting each heading individually.

Body Text Formatting

Line spacing: 1.4–1.6 for comfortable reading
Paragraph length: 3–5 sentences max
Font size: 11–13pt for screen-read PDFs
Margins: 0.75″–1″ for a premium feel

Callout Box Types

Key Takeaway — colored background, bold border, summarizing the section’s point
Action Step — distinct styling signaling “stop reading, go do this”
Pro Tip — for additional insights beyond the core content

Callout boxes break up long text passages, improve scannability, and signal that you’ve thoughtfully organized the content for the reader’s benefit.

🖼️

Images and graphics: Every 2–3 pages should include some visual element — a relevant image, a simple diagram, a screenshot, or a styled quote pull-out. Pages of unbroken text feel like a chore. Visual breaks make the document feel more approachable and faster to consume.

L10M4.5

Designing Promotional Assets

Beyond the product itself, you need a set of promotional graphics to market it across every channel.

1

Sales Page Hero Image

A larger, more detailed version of your cover — often shown alongside a mockup, a “what’s inside” preview, or a collage of internal pages. The first visual a sales page visitor sees.

2

Social Media Announcement Graphics

A set of 3–5 graphics for announcing your product launch across platforms:

  • Instagram square (1080×1080px): cover + headline + price
  • Instagram Story (1080×1920px): cover + “Now Available” + swipe-up/link CTA
  • Twitter/X image (1200×675px): cover + key benefit statement
  • LinkedIn image (1200×627px): professional framing of the product and its outcome
3

Email Header Graphic

A banner image for your launch email sequence — typically the cover image with a “Now Available” badge or launch-specific messaging.

4

“What’s Inside” Preview Graphic

A single graphic showing a visual table of contents or feature list — useful for sales pages and social posts where you want to communicate comprehensiveness at a glance.

5

Testimonial Graphics post-launch

Once you have buyer feedback, create simple, branded graphics featuring testimonial quotes. Far more persuasive than your own claims about the product’s value.

⚡ Magic Resize

Use Canva’s Magic Resize (Pro) to take one core design and automatically resize it to every platform’s dimensions. Design once, resize for each platform, adjust text/cropping as needed.

L10M4.6

Using AI to Accelerate Design Decisions

While AI cannot directly produce Canva designs, it accelerates the creative decisions that precede design work.

Cover Copy

Prompt

“Generate 10 title and subtitle combinations for a digital product cover. The product is [describe]. The outcome it delivers: [describe]. Title should be 3–6 words. Subtitle should communicate the specific benefit in under 12 words.”

Color Palette Suggestions

Prompt

“I’m designing a digital product cover for a [niche] audience. My brand colors are [list current colors]. Suggest a complementary 2-color accent palette that would work well for callout boxes and section headers while staying consistent with my brand.”

“What’s Inside” Copy

Prompt

“Write 5–7 bullet points summarizing what’s included in this digital product for a ‘What’s Inside’ graphic: [describe product contents]. Each bullet should be under 8 words and lead with a benefit, not just a feature description.”

Image Generation

If your product needs custom illustrative imagery rather than stock photos, use Canva’s Magic Media (AI image generation) directly within the design tool, or generate images via ChatGPT Plus’s DALL·E integration and import them into Canva.
