What You’ll Walk Away With
A complete AI-powered SEO and keyword research workflow that replaces expensive paid tools for most research tasks, produces deeper competitive insights than standard keyword tools alone, and integrates directly into your content production system.

What AI Changes About SEO Research

Traditional keyword research has always required at least one paid tool — Ahrefs ($99+/month), SEMrush ($129+/month), or Moz ($99+/month). These tools are excellent and worth the investment when you’re scaling. But for a beginner building their first affiliate site, they represent a significant monthly expense before you’ve earned a single dollar.

AI changes the equation. Not by replacing keyword tools entirely — they still provide unique data like backlink profiles and domain authority scores — but by replacing the bulk of the research process with something faster, cheaper, and in many cases more insightful.

Here’s what AI does for SEO research that keyword tools can’t:

Intent Analysis

AI can tell you not just what people are searching for, but why — what stage of awareness they’re at, what outcome they want, what objections they have.

Content Gaps

AI can analyze multiple competitor articles and tell you exactly what none of them cover well — your differentiation opportunity.

Semantic Clusters

AI generates related keyword variations and LSI terms faster than any tool, helping you cover a topic more completely.

Competitive Positioning

AI can evaluate a SERP and recommend the specific angle that gives a new site the best chance of ranking.

Used together with free keyword tools, AI makes sophisticated SEO research accessible from day one — no paid subscriptions required.

The AI SEO Research Workflow

This workflow replaces a paid keyword research tool for most early-stage SEO needs. Use it every time you’re planning a new piece of content.

⏱ Total time: ~45 minutes per keyword

Step 01
Topic Ideation

Topic Ideation With AI

10 min

Start with a broad niche topic and use AI to generate a comprehensive list of sub-topics and content angles.

Prompt — ChatGPT or Claude

“I run an affiliate blog in the [your niche] niche targeting [your audience]. Generate a comprehensive list of content topics organized into these categories: (1) Beginner how-to guides, (2) Product reviews, (3) Product comparisons, (4) Best-of roundups, (5) Advanced strategy guides. Aim for 10 topics per category. Focus on topics with clear buyer intent or high search demand.”

This produces 50 content ideas immediately. Filter them by relevance to your affiliate programs and audience maturity level.

Step 02
Keyword Expansion

Keyword Expansion With Free Tools

10 min

Take your 5–10 best topic ideas and run them through free tools to validate and expand:

→Google Autocomplete: type the topic into Google and note all autocomplete suggestions
→People Also Ask: note every question that appears in the PAA box for your keyword
→Related Searches: note the 8 related searches at the bottom of results
→AnswerThePublic.com (free tier): enter your keyword and see every question format people use when searching for it

Collect your findings in a research document. You now have 20–40 keyword variations and question formats for a single topic.

Step 03
SERP Analysis

Competitive SERP Analysis With AI

10 min

Manually open the top 3–5 Google results for your primary keyword. For each result, note:

→Article length (approximate)
→Main sections / headings covered
→What’s missing or thin in their coverage
→How recently it was published or updated
Prompt — Claude

“Here are my notes on the top 5 results for the keyword ‘[keyword]’: [paste notes]. Based on this competitive analysis: (1) What topics do all of them cover that I must include? (2) What angles, sections, or insights are none of them covering well? (3) What specific content elements would give a new article a better chance of ranking above these results? (4) What is the ideal article structure based on this analysis?”

Claude’s analysis surfaces genuine differentiation opportunities — specific sections, data points, or angles that current top results miss. These gaps are your ranking opportunities.

Step 04
Intent Mapping

Search Intent Mapping With AI

5 min

Understanding search intent — the reason behind a query — is one of the most important and underutilized SEO skills.

Prompt

“For the keyword ‘[your keyword],’ analyze the likely search intent. Specifically: (1) What stage of the buyer journey is this searcher at? (2) What outcome do they want from reading about this topic? (3) What objections or concerns do they likely have? (4) What format of content (review, tutorial, comparison, guide) best matches their intent? (5) What CTA would be most appropriate for this intent?”

This intent map should inform every structural decision in your post — the angle, the depth, the tone, and the affiliate placement strategy.

Step 05
Keyword Cluster

Semantic Keyword Cluster Generation

5 min

Semantic keywords are related terms and phrases that help search engines understand the full scope of your content. Including them naturally improves rankings without keyword stuffing.

Prompt

“Generate a semantic keyword cluster for a blog post about ‘[your topic].’ Include: (1) Primary keyword variations (different ways to search for the same thing), (2) Related subtopic keywords (topics closely related that should be mentioned), (3) LSI keywords (terms that naturally appear in expert content about this topic), (4) Long-tail question keywords (specific questions people ask about this topic). Organize into a clean list.”

Add the most relevant terms from this list naturally throughout your post — in headings, body paragraphs, and alt text.

Step 06
Title & Meta

Title and Meta Description Optimization

5 min

The title tag and meta description directly determine your click-through rate from search results.

Titles Prompt

“Write 10 title tag options for a blog post about ‘[topic]’ targeting the keyword ‘[keyword].’ Each title should: include the keyword naturally, be under 60 characters, communicate a clear benefit or promise, and be compelling enough to earn a click over competitors. Mix formats: question, list, how-to, and declarative statement.”

Meta Description Prompt

“Write 5 meta description options for this blog post. Each should: be 150–160 characters, include the keyword ‘[keyword]’ naturally, summarize the value of the post, and include a clear benefit or call to action. Write as if you’re convincing someone to click your result over the other 9 results on the page.”

AI-Powered Content Optimization

SEO doesn’t end when you publish. Ongoing optimization of existing content is often more impactful than publishing new content — especially for posts ranking but not yet on page one.

Frequency

Run this workflow once per month on your top 10 posts by traffic potential.

Step 01
Pull Data

Pull Data From Google Search Console

Go to Performance → Search Results. Filter by your target post URL. Look for:

→Keywords your post is ranking for — especially any in positions 5–20 (your quick-win opportunities)
→Impressions vs. clicks ratio — high impression, low click rate means your title/meta description needs work

Step 02
Gap Analysis

Gap Analysis With AI

Take your current post content and the keywords it’s already ranking for, then run this analysis:

Prompt — Claude

“I have a blog post about ‘[topic]’ that is currently ranking for these keywords: [list keywords from Search Console]. The post content is: [paste first 500 words or the full outline]. Identify: (1) What additional sections or information could be added to better serve these existing rankings? (2) What related keywords does the post not currently address that I should add? (3) What structural improvements (better headers, clearer organization) would improve the post’s comprehensiveness? (4) Is the post’s introduction compelling enough for someone clicking from a search result?”

Step 03
Implement

Implement the Updates

Based on AI’s analysis, update the post:

→Add new sections covering identified gaps
→Improve the introduction if flagged
→Add semantic keywords naturally into existing sections
→Update any outdated information (pricing, product features, statistics)
→Add new internal links to posts published since this one was written

Update the post date in WordPress after making significant updates — this signals to Google that the content is fresh.

L2M5.4

Building a Keyword Research Database

As your content library grows, your keyword research database becomes increasingly valuable — a reference you can consult before starting any new piece of content. Structure it in Google Sheets:

Google Sheets — Keyword Tracker
Column What to Track
Keyword The target keyword
Monthly Volume From Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest
Difficulty From any keyword tool (0–100)
Intent Informational / Commercial / Transactional
Content Type Review / Comparison / Tutorial / Roundup
Affiliate Angle Which programs to feature
Status Ideas / In Progress / Published
URL Link to published post
Current Position Update monthly from Search Console
Monthly Clicks Update monthly from Search Console

Maintain this sheet as your content planning hub. Before writing any new post, check that the keyword is in the sheet, validated, and hasn’t already been covered.

Use AI to populate the sheet faster:

Prompt — bulk sheet population

“Here are 20 keyword ideas for my [niche] blog: [list keywords]. For each one, identify: (1) Likely monthly search volume range (low / medium / high), (2) Likely keyword difficulty for a new site (easy / medium / hard), (3) Primary search intent, (4) Best content type for this keyword, (5) Which of my affiliate programs ([list programs]) would be most relevant to feature.”

💡

AI can’t give you exact search volume data — you need a keyword tool for that. But it can populate every other column intelligently and save you hours of manual analysis.
