What You’ll Walk Away With
A working knowledge of all three pillars of SEO — keyword research, on-page optimisation, and technical SEO — plus a practical implementation checklist you apply to every piece of content you publish from this point forward.

L4M2.1

SEO Is Not Magic. It Is a System.

Most beginners approach SEO as a mystery — a black box controlled by Google’s algorithm that randomly decides which content to reward. That framing is both wrong and paralyzing.

SEO is a system with discoverable rules.

Google’s fundamental goal — unchanged since its founding — is to return the most relevant, most trustworthy, most useful result for any given search query. Every SEO practice is either helping Google verify that your content meets those criteria, or it isn’t.

When you understand that, SEO stops being mysterious and starts being actionable. You’re not gaming an algorithm. You’re demonstrating to Google — through your content quality, your site structure, and your authority signals — that your pages genuinely deserve to rank.

The three pillars covered in this module
01
Keyword Research — so you know what to create
02
On-Page SEO — so Google understands what you’ve created
03
Technical SEO — so Google can find and trust your site

L4M2.2

Pillar 1: Keyword Research

Covered in depth in Lever 2, Module 5 — key framework below.

The process of identifying the specific words and phrases your target audience types into Google — and understanding which of those searches you can realistically rank for.

1
Seed keywords

Start with 5–10 broad terms that describe your niche. For an AI tools blog: “AI writing tools,” “email marketing software,” “how to start a blog.”

2
Expand and validate

Use Google Autocomplete, People Also Ask, and a free keyword tool (Ubersuggest or Google Keyword Planner) to find specific keyword variations with search volume data.

3
Filter by intent and difficulty

✓Buyer intent (reviews, comparisons, best-of lists)
✓Monthly search volume of 500–10,000
✓Keyword difficulty under 30 for a new site
4
Map to content types

→“[Tool] review” → Product review post
→“[Tool A] vs [Tool B]” → Comparison post
→“Best [tool category]” → Roundup post
→“How to [do something]” → Tutorial post

🗂️
Content cluster strategy

Don’t publish isolated posts. Build clusters — a comprehensive pillar post on a broad topic surrounded by 5–8 supporting posts covering specific subtopics. All supporting posts link back to the pillar. This signals to Google that your site has deep, comprehensive coverage — and rewards the entire cluster with better rankings.

L4M2.3

Pillar 2: On-Page SEO

Everything you do within a specific page or post to help Google understand what it’s about and why it deserves to rank. Use this checklist for every post you publish — aim for a Rank Math score of 80+ before hitting publish.

📋
Title Tag
Most important

What appears as the clickable headline in Google search results. The single most important on-page SEO element.

✓Include your target keyword near the beginning
✓Keep it under 60 characters (longer titles get truncated)
✓Make it compelling enough to earn a click
Format

[Primary Keyword] — [Benefit/Audience] | [Brand]

“MailerLite Review 2025: Best Email Platform for Beginners? | hussledad.com”

🔎
Meta Description

The 150–160 character summary under your title in search results. Doesn’t directly affect ranking but directly affects click-through rate — which indirectly affects ranking.

✓Include your target keyword naturally
✓Describe the value of reading the post
✓Include a soft call to action (“Find out which platform wins”)
✓Write it as a compelling pitch, not just a summary

📐
Heading Structure
H1
Your post title — automatically set by WordPress
H2
Every major section — include target keyword in at least one
H3
Subsections within major sections — use keyword variations

Keep headings descriptive and useful — they’re navigation for readers, not just SEO signals.

🎯
Keyword Placement
✓Include target keyword in the first 100 words
✓Use it naturally 3–5 times throughout the post
✓Use keyword variations and related terms — Google understands semantic relationships
✗Never stuff keywords — unnatural repetition hurts both rankings and readability

🔗
Internal Links

Link to 2–4 other relevant posts on your site from every new post you publish.

Why it matters: internal links pass “link equity” between your pages — strengthening weaker pages by connecting them to stronger ones. They also help Google understand your site’s structure.

💡

After finishing every post, ask: “which 2–3 other posts on my site are most relevant to what I just wrote?” Link to them naturally within the content.

🖼️
Image Optimisation

Every image needs two things:

File name

mailerlite-dashboard-screenshot.jpg

IMG_4729.jpg

Alt text

Describes the image and includes your keyword where it fits naturally. Google cannot see images — alt text is how it understands visual content.

📝
Content Depth & Quality

Google’s Helpful Content Update makes this more important than ever: content must be genuinely useful to the reader, not just technically optimised.

Reviews
1,200–2,000 words
Tutorials
1,500–3,000 words
Roundups
2,000–4,000 words
✓Original perspective and firsthand experience mixed with AI drafts
✓Specific, actionable information — not vague generalities
✓Updated regularly — stale content loses rankings

🌐
URL Slug

Your post’s URL should be clean and keyword-rich. Set this in WordPress when creating the post.

yoursite.com/mailerlite-review
yoursite.com/?p=1247
yoursite.com/2025/04/15/my-review-of-mailerlite-email-marketing-platform

Use your primary keyword, lowercase, hyphens between words, no stop words (a, the, of, for).

L4M2.4

Pillar 3: Technical SEO

Ensures that Google can access, crawl, understand, and index your site without friction. Most technical SEO is set-and-forget — configure it once, don’t touch it again unless something breaks.

📊

Google Search Console
Non-negotiable · Free

Go to search.google.com/search-console, add your site, and verify ownership (Rank Math makes this one click).

→Submit your sitemap (Rank Math generates it at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml)
→Check Coverage report for crawl errors monthly
→Check Performance report to see what keywords you’re ranking for
→Use URL Inspection to submit new posts for indexing immediately after publishing
⚡
Site Speed

Google uses Core Web Vitals as ranking factors. Site speed is the most impactful.

✓Caching plugin — WP Rocket ($59/yr) or W3 Total Cache (free)
✓Compress all images before uploading (ShortPixel plugin or TinyPNG.com)
✓Lightweight theme (Astra or GeneratePress)
✓Enable lazy loading for images
✓CDN — Cloudflare free tier is excellent and easy to set up
🎯

Test at PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev). Aim for 85+ on mobile.

📱
Mobile Optimisation

Over 60% of Google searches happen on mobile. Google uses mobile-first indexing — meaning it primarily uses the mobile version of your site for ranking. Check your site on your phone: does everything render correctly? Are buttons large enough to tap? Is the font readable without zooming?

🔒
SSL Certificate

Your site must load on https:// — a confirmed Google ranking signal and basic trust indicator. Modern hosts (Hostinger, SiteGround) install SSL automatically.

🗺️
XML Sitemap

Tells Google every page on your site. Rank Math generates and maintains it automatically. Verify it exists at yoursite.com/sitemap.xml and submit it in Search Console.

📄
Duplicate Content

Having the same content at multiple URLs confuses Google about which version to rank. Common sources:

→www vs non-www URLs — redirect one to the other (your host can do this)
→HTTP vs HTTPS — redirect HTTP to HTTPS (SSL setup handles this)
→Rank Math’s canonical URL feature handles most issues automatically

L4M2.5

The Link Building Mindset

Backlinks — links from other websites to yours — remain one of Google’s most powerful ranking signals. A link from a respected site in your niche is effectively a vote of confidence that Google counts. Link building is a long-term game, not a quick fix.

✍️
Guest Posting

Write a high-quality post for another blog in your niche. Include one or two natural links back to relevant content on your site. The most reliable link building method for content creators. Aim for one guest post per month.

🏆
Link-Worthy Content (Linkbait)

Create content that other sites naturally want to link to — original research, comprehensive ultimate guides, unique data, free tools. One truly link-worthy piece can earn more backlinks passively than months of active outreach.

📋
Resource Page Outreach

Search “[your niche] + useful resources” or “[your niche] + recommended tools.” Email the site owner and suggest your content as a resource. Conversion rates are low but the links are high-quality.

🔧
Broken Link Building

Use the Check My Links Chrome extension to find broken links on sites in your niche. Email the site owner, note the broken link, and suggest your content as a replacement. Helpful framing, decent conversion rate.

📰
HARO (Help A Reporter Out)

Journalists and bloggers post requests for expert sources. Responding with genuinely useful quotes earns mentions and links in published articles — often from high-authority publications. Sign up at helpareporter.com.
